About this conversion
An .ost is the copy Outlook keeps on your disk so it can work offline. People go looking for it exactly when the account is gone — a job ended, a mailbox was closed — and the file is all that is left. It is built like a .pst, so it is read the same way, on your own machine.

You are not locked into EML
The file is parsed once and stays open, so the format is picked at the end rather than the beginning: the same .ost can leave here as CSV, XLSX, ZIP, MBOX, PDF, HTML, TXT or JSON. Before that you can search it by subject or address, filter by year, sender and attachment type, mark the duplicates and look through the archive overview.

- An .ost is useless without the account it belongs to. As .eml the messages open in any mail client.
- Are attachments kept?
