About this conversion
A Takeout download answers none of the questions people actually have about their own mail: how much of it there is, who sent most of it, which years it covers, how many messages carry attachments. As a table it answers all of them at once. Drop the archive exactly as Google gave it to you — the mbox inside is found on its own — and every message becomes a row you can sort and count in Excel.

You are not locked into CSV
The file is parsed once and stays open, so the format is picked at the end rather than the beginning: the same archive can leave here as XLSX, ZIP, EML, MBOX, PDF, HTML, TXT or JSON. Before that you can search it by subject or address, filter by year, sender and attachment type, mark the duplicates and look through the archive overview.
Questions
- Do I need to unpack the Takeout archive?
- No. Drop the .tgz, .tar.gz or .zip as it downloaded; the mbox inside, including the Takeout/Mail/ folders, is found for you.
- My export came in several files — can I do them together?
- Yes. Select all the parts at once and they are read as one archive, so the table covers everything.
- What ends up in the columns?
- Date, sender, recipients, subject, size, how many attachments and their names. Duplicates are marked, which matters in Takeout exports where the same message appears under several labels.
