What a .emlx file is
An .emlx is an ordinary message wrapped in a few bytes of Apple housekeeping: a length at the top and a small property list at the bottom. Outside macOS almost nothing knows what to do with that.
The files turn up after moving off a Mac, or inside a Time Machine backup nobody can read any more. Converting them to .eml makes them ordinary mail again.
