About this conversion
An .emlx is what Apple Mail writes for every message it stores, and it is nearly always found by someone who no longer has the Mac it came from. The format is a plain message with a length in front and Apple bookkeeping behind, so once that wrapper is peeled away it reads like any other mail — and saves as a document that anyone can open.

You are not locked into PDF
The file is parsed once and stays open, so the format is picked at the end rather than the beginning: the same .emlx can leave here as CSV, XLSX, ZIP, EML, MBOX, HTML, TXT or JSON. Before that you can search it by subject or address, filter by year, sender and attachment type, mark the duplicates and look through the archive overview.
Questions
- Do I need a Mac or Apple Mail?
- No. The file is read here, on Windows, Linux or ChromeOS just as well.
- What about .partial.emlx files?
- Those hold a message whose attachments Apple Mail left on the server. The text opens; the missing attachments are not in the file to begin with.
- Can I convert a whole Messages folder?
- Yes. Select the folder and every message inside it is read as one set.
